Candlestick Crafts

IMG_6347

When we are planning a dinner or a party, we tend to focus more on the food than the décor.  Not that we don’t want things to be pretty (heavens no!), but we sometimes leave the décor to the last minute.  But necessity is the mother of all invention, right?  Nothing gets the creative juices flowing more than a “guests will arrive in thirty minutes”  shot of adrenaline.

In one such recent scenario while Josh was just starting to shake the cocktails, I ran about the house frantically trying to see what would “inspire” me.

I had to look no further than the bookcase in The Farm Room (the bedroom that offers the best view of the goats grazing in the fields).   Sitting on the shelves (with only a very, very thin layer of dust) was a collection of brass candlesticks.

…and there was my inspiration

Dig in your craft bin for a styrofoam ball. This one is about 7 inches in diameter.

Choose a flower in your garden that you have in abundance and that has a sturdy stem like this rhudbeckia. Using a bamboo skewer, poke holes in the sytrofoam spaking each of the flowers so that the tips of the petals just barely overlap.

This arrangement is obviously not meant to last for days, but you can keep it looking fresh by spritzing it with water using a spray water bottle.

A charming accent for any table or nook.

Hi, Dr. Brent. What a great idea – it is great to do something different than the usual flowers in a vase. I am sure your guests loved the arrangement.

I love this idea. For some reason, I hear Brini Maxwell in my ear saying, “now, why didn’t YOU think of that?”

I may have to try some variations on the theme.. moss covered spheres to accent a fall table arrangement, beautifully colored fall leaves, holly leaves for the holidays… I can go on and on.

    Inspired!

Great idea!!! I wrote a tutorial with photos for a similar idea in which I painted the styrofoam spheres then glued lavender buds to them. Found various containers around the house to display them in. A candlestick will be the next I try. Thanks.
